Photo of the Week, Year 3, Week 24

It is so very important to connect yourself with like-minded people.  As much as any one of us might revel in being different from everyone else, there is still a part of us that longs to find a way to connect with someone else that’s just like us on some level.  When I was working on my degree, I was fortunate to be surrounded by some wonderfully creative minds.  Along with my second home the darkroom, it was one of the toughest things to let go of when I graduated.  I managed to find a way to keep working on my photography, but without a community of like-minded individuals, it was more difficult to stick to it at times.  As a group we have a way of helping each other through creative rough patches, over technical hurdles, and celebrating in triumphs that others may not understand.  Simply “talking shop” with others that have first-hand knowledge of the subject is a pleasure and a necessity.

In January, I joined a local photographer’s group (the Napa Valley Photographic Society – of which, two members joined in POTW this week) and I’m so glad I did.  I have found a community of people to interact with face-to-face that share a common thread – their love of photography.  I had forgotten how much I enjoyed being able to “geek out” on photography without worrying if the person I was talking to would glaze over with incomprehension or simply loose interest.  In a way, I started building that community right here with POTW.  I love how this feature has connected me with some truly talented photographers that I never would have met otherwise.  Thank you all for being a part of my creative community!
